Difference Between Hollyhock and Mallow

1. Different plant types

Hollyhock is a biennial upright herb with a very tall plant shape, which can reach about two meters in height. The stems and branches are densely covered with spines, and the spacing between the spines is small.

Mallow is a biennial or perennial upright herb. Its plant shape is much shorter than the former, about 50-90 cm in height, with many branches and sparsely distributed coarse hairs.

2. Different leaves

The leaves of hollyhock are relatively large, and the shape of the leaves is almost circular, with a diameter of about 6-16 cm. The petiole is relatively long, about 5-15 cm long. The leaves are coarsely pubescent above and stiffly hairy below.

The leaves of mallow are relatively small, and the shape of the leaves is heart-shaped or kidney-shaped, about 5-12 cm long, and the width is about the same as the length. The petiole is shorter, about 4-8 cm. The leaves are hairless on both sides, with short, rough hairs sparsely distributed on the smooth veins.

3. Different flowers

The flowering period of hollyhock is around June to August every year, and the flowering period can last from March to April. Its flowers are relatively large and the colors are rich and varied, including red, pink, yellow, white, etc.

The flowering period of mallow is from May to October, and can last from May to June. The flowering period is relatively long. The flowers are small and the color is very monotonous, only pink and purple.
