How to remedy cactus root rot?

Cacti are famous for being hardy and easy to grow. They generally live in deserts and are highly adaptable. However, when potted plants are maintained, improper management may cause root rot. So how to remedy cactus root rot? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Stop watering

Root rot is usually caused by overwatering which leads to root rot. Stop watering immediately and allow the soil to dry out thoroughly.

2. Remove from the basin

To remove a cactus with rotten roots from the pot, you can usually dig out the sand around the plant, and then take the cactus plant out of the pot gently to avoid breaking the plant.

3. Remove rotten roots

Carefully check the roots and stems of the cactus, and remove any rotten roots or decayed parts immediately. Using clean scissors or a razor blade, cut away any damaged areas, making sure to leave healthy tissue behind.

4. Apply carbendazim

After cutting off the rotten part, you can apply a little carbendazim on the cut, then put it in a cool place to let the wound dry, and then carry out cuttings to prevent the wound from rotting again.

5. Replace soil

Choose dry, well-aerated soil. Avoid using soil that contains too much moisture. You can add some perlite or sand to increase drainage.

6. Re-cutting

Dig a hole in the middle of the soil, not too deep, then insert the dried cactus into the hole and fill the surrounding soil, trying to make the cactus plant stable. Generally, the insertion depth is 2 cm, and there is no need to insert it too deep.

7. Post-maintenance

After the cactus is grafted, do not water it immediately and do not put it in the sun. Wait for 2 days, then put it in a sunny place and let it get more sun. The sun will help it take root. If the cuttings fail and rot occurs, you can cut off the rotten part, dry the wound, and then continue cutting.
