How do ornamental flowers in the garden survive the winter?

Fertilizer and water management

After autumn, the weather begins to get cooler. The flowers have entered the late growth stage at this time. It is necessary to reduce the use of fertilizers with relatively high nitrogen content and increase the use of organic fertilizers with relatively high phosphorus content, which can promote root growth. Gradually reduce the frequency and amount of watering to enhance the roots' resistance to cold. After entering the dormant state, you can turn the soil over and then use organic fertilizer to increase the nutrient content in the soil and help the flowers improve their ability to resist the cold.

Winterizing

Many flowers planted in courtyards are easily harmed in winter, especially peonies and tulips. Before the cold wave arrives, cover the roots of these flowers with some leaves, films and other insulating materials around the surface, which can effectively alleviate frostbite and frost damage. The covering can be removed in May of the following year.

Soil management

Before winter, build up the soil around the roots of the flowers and cover them with a thick layer of soil to keep them warm. When the flowers start to grow in spring, dig up the soil, water and fertilize them appropriately to ensure their normal growth.

Bandage management

Some flowers are large in size and cannot be managed using conventional methods. At this time, you can cover it with straw mats or plastic film, and then tie it up with ropes. Some flowers are easily affected by cold winds. In this case, you can build a windbreak barrier near them and cover them with tarpaulin or straw mats. This method can effectively resist the cold air and help the plants survive the winter.
