How to grow chives at home

How to grow chives at home

The overall growth habits of leek lotus show that it prefers a warm, humid and sunny environment. Not afraid of extreme heat and has strong cold resistance. It is very convenient in home planting.

Temperature requirements

Chive lotus likes a warm environment. Its flowering period is generally from June to September every year.

The most suitable temperature for the growth of leek lotus is 16-28℃. It is not cold-resistant and the wintering temperature should not be lower than 5℃.

If the indoor temperature can be kept above 15℃ in winter, the leek lotus can continue to grow healthily. It can even bloom.

Lighting requirements

Chive lotus likes an environment with plenty of sunlight. If it grows in a shaded environment, the quality of the bulbs obtained will be poor.

Although it can bloom in semi-shade, the number of flowers is small and the flowering period is short.

Too much shade may result in no flowering.

Water requirements

Chive lotus likes a slightly moist and dry soil environment, and is drought-tolerant but afraid of waterlogging.

During the growing season, the soil should be kept dry and moist, and there should be no accumulation of water. After September, reduce the amount of watering, and from November to February of the following spring, ensure the soil is slightly dry and slightly moist.

Soil requirements

The most suitable soil for chive lotus should be well-drained, humus-rich sandy soil.

However, leek lotus is tenacious in nature and does not have high requirements for soil when cultivated at home. It can adapt to soils from slightly acidic to weakly alkaline, and from sandy soil to light clay.

You can put a layer of broken hard plastic foam blocks or broken bricks and tiles at the bottom of the pot to allow ventilation and drainage.
