What is the safflower?

The sweet scent flower refers to the sweet scented osmanthus, also known as the fragrant osmanthus and the thousand-mile osmanthus, which is native to Taiwan, tropical Asia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It belongs to the Rutaceae family, the genus Lucifolia, an evergreen tree or small shrub, with terminal or axillary umbels, white flowers, and a strong fragrance that can be smelled from far away. According to legend, the fragrance can be smelled from seven miles away, hence the name "Qilixiang". After flowering, it will produce red berries. The ripe fruits are edible and have a good effect in repelling mosquitoes.

Osmanthus fragrans is a tropical ornamental plant, often used for garden hedges and bonsai. The flowers of Osmanthus fragrans have a pleasant aroma. It is planted as a hedge in the south, or as the foundation of buildings. It can also be planted in pots for indoor viewing. The flowers can be used to extract aromatic oils.

The characteristics of Osmanthus fragrans' dense growth and strong fragrance are often mentioned in literary and artistic works to express a certain specific artistic conception. The first poem in the writing career of Xi Murong, a famous Taiwanese female writer in the 20th century, was titled "Seven-Li Osmanthus". The poet used Seven-Li Osmanthus as the background to recall her youthful past twenty years ago. Jay Chou also sang a song with the same name!
