What is the difference between cosmos and gesang flowers?

What is Cosmos

Cosmos is an annual herb with thin, upright stems, many branches, and smooth stems or those with fine hairs. Simple leaves are opposite, about 10 cm long, bipinnately divided, with narrow linear lobes, entire margin and no teeth.

The flower heads are borne on slender pedicels, terminal or axillary, with pedicels 5 to 8 cm long. There are 2 layers of total capsule, and the inner layer has membranous edges. There is one whorl of ligulate flowers with serrated petals. There are 8 petals in white, pink or dark red.

The tubular flowers occupy the central part of the disk and are all yellow. Achenes have rafters, seeds have a lifespan of 3 to 4 years, and 1,000-grain weight is 6 g. The flowering period is summer to autumn, and the seeds are crescent-shaped.

Horticultural varieties include white-flowered cosmos, large-flowered cosmos, and purple-red cosmos. Horticultural varieties are divided into two major systems: early-flowering and late-flowering types, and are also divided into single and double petals.

What is Gesang flower?

Gesang flower is also known as Gesang Meiduo, and there is widespread controversy as to what kind of plant it is. In Tibetan, "Gesang" means "good times" or "happiness", and "Meiduo" means flower, so Gesang flower is also called the flower of happiness. It has long been a symbol of the Tibetan people's hope for happiness and auspiciousness.

According to relevant literature research and interviews with key figures, the cosmos that is regarded as Gesang flower in a large number of Tibetan films, songs, and Tibetan journals is not the real Gesang flower.

In a broad sense, "Gesang Meiduo" is most likely a synonym for the most tenacious wild flower on the plateau. From the botanical characteristics, the Aster plants of the Aster family and the cultivated aster, which is common from Lhasa to Chamdo, both meet the characteristics of Gesang flowers.

The difference between the two

In Tibet, people often use Gesang flowers to express and let out their beautiful emotions, and there are many songs and stories praising Gesang flowers. The Gesang flower holds a very high position in the hearts of the Tibetan people and is regarded by them as a holy flower that symbolizes love and auspiciousness.

There are several plants called Gesang flowers by the people in Tibetan areas: Persian chrysanthemum, aster, alpine rhododendron, and fruticosa.

That is to say, Cosmos can be Gesang flower, but Gesang flower includes many kinds of plants. People often place good wishes on flowers, so this Gesang flower can be a roadside chrysanthemum or a fuchsia.

Gesang flowers are a large category, and Cosmos is just one of them. Now do you understand the relationship between Cosmos and Gesang flowers?
