Cultivation methods and precautions of coleus

Soil requirements

Friends who grow flowers know that the soil needed for plant growth must be well-drained, breathable, loose and fertile, and rich in humus.

Watering requirements

Coleus has strict requirements for water. During the growth period, the potting soil and environment need to be kept moist, avoiding drought and preventing waterlogging. Its greatest ornamental value lies in its colorful leaves. Once it is watered too much, the leaves will easily become dehydrated and discolored, and the roots will easily become infected and rot.

Sunlight requirements

Light has a great influence on the color of coleus leaves. When there is sufficient sunlight, the leaf color will be obviously much brighter, but avoid exposure to the scorching sun in midsummer. Excessive sunlight will cause the leaves to become rough and lose their luster. Of course, if coleus is kept in a shaded environment for a long time, the color of its leaves will not be bright.

Temperature requirements

Coleus likes a warm and humid environment and requires relatively fresh air. In winter, the room temperature should be controlled at 20~25℃. The lowest wintering temperature should not be lower than 10℃. If the temperature is too low, the leaves will turn yellow and fall off. If the temperature is below 5℃, the plants will gradually wither and die. When maintaining the plant in other seasons, try to keep the temperature within a certain range and avoid sudden changes.

Fertilization requirements

Coleus does not require much fertilizer, so when planting, apply enough base fertilizer. Apply thin fertilizer mainly composed of nitrogen 1 to 2 times a month during the growing season.

Pest Control

Coleus is prone to damping-off disease during the seedling stage, so care should be taken to disinfect the soil during planting. If leaf spot disease occurs during the growing period, you can use 50% thiophanate solution to spray and sterilize. When cultivating coleus indoors at home, it is prone to damage by scale insects, red spiders and whiteflies. You can choose to spray a 1000 times solution of omethoate.
