Bupleurum is one of the most common Chinese medicinal herbs and was mainly grown in the wild in the past. But now many areas are developing artificial cultivation. Let’s take a look at what kind of land is suitable for growing Bupleurum and what the planting time and method are. What kind of land is suitable for growing Bupleurum? The land for planting Bupleurum should be selected with deep, loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam. It is best if the soil is rich in humus, but it can also be improved by artificial fertilization. The previous crop should preferably be wheat or corn. It should not be planted continuously or on newly reclaimed wasteland . Planting time and method of Bupleurum 1. Planting time The sowing and seedling raising time of Bupleurum is mainly in spring and autumn, spring is March to April, and autumn is around early October. However, Bupleurum is best sown in autumn. Therefore, it is recommended to choose spring seedling raising and autumn transplanting. 2. Sowing and seedling raising When sowing, the main method used is row sowing. Dig ditches with a plant spacing of 20 cm, a depth of about 2 cm, and a width of about 2.5 cm. Sow the seeds very evenly into the turned small furrows, then cover them with a thin layer of fine soil and gently press them down with a plow harrow. After all the seeds are sown, irrigate with fine water in the morning or evening. Remember not to water too much, just enough, and keep the soil moist. As for the germination time, if the temperature can be maintained above 10° after sowing, the seedlings will emerge in about 7 days. If the weather is cold, the seedlings will gradually emerge after about 10 days. 3. Seedling management After the Bupleurum chinense seedlings emerge, observe the growth conditions in time. When it is necessary to loosen the soil and weed, it is better to adopt manual weeding in time. When the ground needs to be fertilized, some chemical fertilizers can be appropriately added, such as urea, compound fertilizer , etc. If there is frequent rain in autumn, special attention should be paid to preventing and controlling waterlogging. Therefore, it is necessary to indirectly maintain loose soil and take timely soil cultivation measures to prevent the current situation of lodging of Bupleurum seedlings. 4. Transplantation When the Bupleurum plant grows to a height of about 3 cm and its root system is about 5 cm, it can be transplanted at this stage. Adopt the method of digging and planting at the same time. When transplanting, the row spacing should be about 25 cm and the plant spacing should be about 10 cm. After all the plots are transplanted, try to water them in the evening to increase the survival rate of the transplants. 5. Field management After Bupleurum is transplanted, it needs to go through a period of seedling acclimatization. Field management then requires nothing more than loosening the soil, weeding in time, and controlling diseases and pests in time. When the seedlings are 4 cm to 6 cm tall, the first inter-row cultivation and weeding should be carried out; when the seedlings are 7 cm to 8 cm tall, the second inter-row cultivation and weeding should be carried out; when the seedlings are 10 cm to 12 cm tall (after planting), the third inter-row cultivation and weeding should be carried out. Water should be applied in time during drought, and topdressing should be carried out 2 to 3 times a year in combination with tillage and weeding. Manure, cake fertilizer, or chemical fertilizer can be applied, and trenches should be dug for topdressing. Generally, topping is required around the end of July to control the excessive growth of the plants. 6. Harvest For Bupleurum sown in the autumn of the current year, the plants will grow vigorously in August and September of the following year. When it starts to bloom, all the stems growing above the ground can be cut off. Let it grow until the third year, and then the whole plant can be harvested. That’s it |
