The cultivation methods and precautions of bougainvillea

The cultivation methods and precautions of bougainvillea

1. Soil

The soil for bougainvillea is generally a mixture of garden soil, leaf mold, and fine sand, with an appropriate amount of bone meal added. Buy a small pot of bougainvillea directly from the flower market. There is no need to change the soil in the short term, just use the original soil. After 1-2 years of cultivation, replace part of the soil with new soil when repotting. The proportion is as follows (I won’t tell ordinary people):

Garden soil: leaf mold: sand are mixed in a ratio of 5:3:2, or peat soil: leaf mold: sand: perlite are mixed in a ratio of 5:2:2:1.

2. Watering

Bougainvillea requires a lot of water, and watering varies slightly in each season:

In spring, the growth of bougainvillea gradually accelerates and needs to be watered every day, and water should be sprinkled on the leaves and around them frequently to increase the air humidity. If you water less in spring, the leaves will fall due to lack of humidity.

In summer, Bougainvillea needs watering twice a day, spraying water in the morning and watering once after 4 pm.

In autumn, after the temperature drops, just keep the soil in the pot moist. When the temperature is below 10℃, reduce watering and keep the soil in the pot dry. If the temperature is above 15℃, you can water it appropriately.

Reduce watering in winter and do not water unless the soil in the pot is dry.

3. Fertilization

Bougainvillea likes fertilizer. After the weather warms up in spring, apply nitrogen fertilizer once every 10 to 15 days, apply cake fertilizer water once a week during the growing season, and apply phosphorus fertilizer several times during the flowering period. Reduce the amount of fertilizer after the autumn cools down, and stop fertilizing in the winter. During the peak growth and flowering season, you can spray 1000 times potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the leaves 2 to 3 times, or apply general fertilizer once every 10 days.

Note: Bougainvillea is very sensitive to urea. If improper fertilizer is applied, it may result in luxuriant branches and leaves but few flowers, so be especially careful when applying urea.

4. Light temperature

The suitable temperature for the growth of Bougainvillea is 20~30℃, and the leaves will fall if the temperature is below 5℃ in winter.

Bougainvillea likes light. If there is insufficient light, the plant will grow weakly and its flowering will be affected. In winter, bougainvillea should be placed in a bright place, and the daily lighting time should not be less than 8 hours, otherwise large areas of leaves will fall.

5. Notes

1. Selection of flower pots. It is best to choose a rectangular or oval purple clay pot for caring for bougainvillea. The color should not be too dark, so as to bring out the color of the bougainvillea. A suitable flowerpot can not only make the bougainvillea grow healthily, but also make it look more pleasing to the eye.

2. Shaping and pruning. Before and after the flowering of Bougainvillea, a large number of leaves and flowers will fall, which is a natural phenomenon that cannot be avoided, but it is necessary to do a good job of cleaning up, clean up the fallen leaves in time, cut off the diseased branches and withered branches, and treat the new branches frequently, to promote branching and ensure vigorous flowering.

3. Disease and pest control. Bougainvillea has fewer diseases and pests, which usually appear in winter and spring. It will be harmed by scale insects and moths when going out or entering the house. It should be discovered and removed in time during home maintenance, and sprayed with pesticides.
