The origin of the name of dancing grass

The reason why dancing grass is called dancing grass is because it sometimes appears to dance. There are a large number of small linear leaflets on both sides of the leaves of dancing grass, which are very sensitive to sound waves. Under the sunlight, if the temperature is not lower than 22℃, if stimulated by sound waves, the leaves of the dancing grass will dance continuously, as if they were dancing, so it is called dancing grass.

Dancing grass has a very sad and beautiful legend.

In ancient Xishuangbanna, there was a beautiful and kind Dai girl named Duoyi. Duoyi has a natural love for dancing and is an excellent dancer. During the slack season in farming, Duoyi would often travel between villages of various ethnic groups, dancing to her heart's content and performing for the villagers. Duoyi has a graceful figure. Whenever she dances, she looks like a golden peacock drinking water and playing in the woods or by a spring, or like a crane flying freely over the fields. Everyone who watches her dance will be intoxicated by it, forgetting their sorrow and pain, and even forgetting themselves.

Later, Duoyi gradually gained a good reputation and many people knew her. Until later, a hateful chieftain took a fancy to Duoyi, led many servants to forcibly take her back, and asked Duoyi to dance for him every day. Duoyi refused to obey and escaped when the guards were not paying attention and jumped into the Lancang River. Many ordinary people rushed to the Lancang River to salvage Duoyi's body and held a grand funeral for her.

Later, a very beautiful grass grew on Duoyi's grave. Whenever music was played, the grass would dance to the music. People called this grass dancing grass and believed that it was the incarnation of Duoyi.
