The Flower Language of Viburnum

The magnolia is a beautiful flower and has been used to represent beauty since ancient times. This also confirms its flower language: beauty, romance, and it also symbolizes a perfect love.

On Valentine's Day or when pursuing someone you like, magnolia can be given as a gift to express your love.

Flowering period of Viburnum

Viburnum is a semi-evergreen shrub with cymes growing at the top of branches and eight sterile flowers around the flowers that develop from sepals. The corolla is white, with a light and elegant fragrance, and is of great ornamental value. It is usually grown as a potted plant in the bedroom, and is also used for garden viewing or in offices and study rooms.

The flowering period of magnolia is between April and May every year, which is the best time to view the flowers.

Legend and History of Viburnum

The magnolia is the city flower of Yangzhou and is known as one of the three treasures of Kunshan. It is a precious flower species unique to Chinese history. There are also many records about the legends and history of the magnolia.

Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty Admiring Magnolia

It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Yang of Sui heard that there were magnolias in full bloom in Yangzhou and many people went there to see them. So, in order to see the beauty of the magnolias, Emperor Yang of Sui personally led an army to Yangzhou to see them. However, the journey was long and arduous, so in order to see the magnolias as soon as possible, Emperor Yang of Sui ordered the construction of the Grand Canal. People could quickly reach Yangzhou via the Grand Canal, and the Grand Canal opened up transportation in Yangzhou, so the economy also developed.

History of Viburnum

During the Song Dynasty, all the magnolias in Yangzhou were uprooted, flattened and buried due to the invasion of the Jin army. But after a year, the uprooted magnolia sprouted new buds, and with the careful care of people, it slowly recovered its original beautiful and vigorous appearance. People thought that the magnolias would grow again as before, but surprisingly, on the day the Song Dynasty fell, all the magnolias in Yangzhou suddenly died. Thus, the unique magnolias in Yangzhou became a rare treasure that could never be seen again.
