Flower language of Nepenthes

Origin of the name of Nepenthes

The name Nepenthes first appeared in a book written by Carolus Linnaeus in 1737 (Clifford's Garden). In the book, there is an English title "Nepenthes pharmakon", in which Nepenthes means no sadness in Chinese. In Greek mythology, Nepenthe is a medicine that can make people forget their sorrow.

In the book, Linnaeus once wrote, "After a long journey, when you discover this wonderful plant, you will be amazed by it, forget all the unhappiness, and marvel at how magical nature is." Linnaeus officially announced the naming of the genus Nepenthes in his 1753 work.

In addition, the pitcher plant has a unique organ - the insect capsule, which is a cylindrical object with a bulging lower part, like a pig cage, so it is translated into pitcher plant in Chinese.

Flower language of Nepenthes

Generally speaking, blooming pitcher plant flowers represent good fortune, abundant financial resources, freedom from desires, and freedom from worries.

American flower experts believe that pitcher plants can grow well without fertilizer. Therefore, the flower language of pitcher plants is defined as "carefree, free of desires and demands". But in China, pitcher plants have always been regarded as a lucky flower that symbolizes good fortune and prosperity. There is also a folk saying that "pig cage into water" means prosperity and prosperity.

After seeing these, are you also tempted to grow a pitcher plant at home?
