Can oleander be grown indoors?

Living Environment

Oleander likes plenty of light, warm and humid conditions. Therefore, if there is insufficient light at home, it is best not to grow oleander. When maintaining it, try to place it on the balcony windowsill where it can be exposed to the external environment. Oleander can overwinter in the open air in warm areas, but must overwinter indoors in the north.

toxicity

Oleander is one of the most poisonous plants, containing a variety of toxins, some of which are even deadly. It is extremely toxic and has been reported to be fatal or nearly fatal in small doses. The most abundant toxins are the cardiac glycosides oleandrin and neriine. Cardiac glycosides are natural plant or animal toxins that have both positive and toxic effects on the heart. These toxins can be found in all parts of the oleander plant, with the highest concentrations in the sap, which can cause paralysis on the skin. Scientists believe that there are still many unknown harmful substances in oleander. In addition, oleander bark contains rosagenin, which can have the same effect as strychnine. The entire plant, including its sap, is toxic, and other parts may also have adverse effects. The toxicity of oleander remains after it dries up, and the smoke produced by burning oleander is also highly toxic. A few or 10-20 leaves can cause adverse effects in adults, and a single leaf can kill an infant. For animals, as little as 0.5 mg of oleander per kilogram of body weight can be fatal. Most animals have adverse or fatal reactions to oleander.

Therefore, if you have children or pets at home, try not to choose oleander to avoid accidental ingestion.

Can it be maintained indoors?

Flowers that are not poisonous cannot be grown at home. Flowers are poisonous and are their own natural weapon. As long as people don't eat it or touch its poisonous parts and juice, these poisonous flowers can still beautify our home environment. Of course, the premise is that the indoor environment can meet the normal growth needs of the plants.
