How to propagate and raise cycads

How to propagate and raise cycads

1. How to breed

1. Seed propagation: It is unlikely that Cycad will produce seeds after flowering. If there are signs of flowering and seeding, you can pick the seeds. After picking, you can sow it at any time, or store it and sow and propagate it during the Spring Festival of the following year. The shell of the seeds is very hard and cannot be sown immediately after picking. They need to be soaked in warm water for a while, then taken out and disinfected for a while, and then washed and dried. After preparing the soil, you can sow the seeds and plant them.

2. Cutting propagation: Cutting propagation can be carried out around May every year, but this method is not commonly used. First cut the stem into 10-15 cm thick slices, then place them in a cool place to dry. After the slices are dried, bury them in sandy soil. After a period of time, the iron tree slices will sprout new buds. Then prepare loose humus soil and bury the germinated slices in it.

3. Tillering propagation: Tillering propagation is carried out in January and February each year. Cut off the fully grown tiller buds from the germination site, and then plant the tiller buds in nutritious culture soil.

2. How to raise

Cycas revoluta is suitable for growing in fertile, loose, slightly acidic sandy soil. In order to ensure its growth, it is best to provide suitable soil. Keep it in a sunny environment, but provide adequate shade. Water appropriately during the growing season to keep the soil moist, and keep it somewhat dry in winter. During the growing season, apply compound fertilizer once a month and spray foliar fertilizer to ensure sufficient nutrients.
