Why do poinsettias rot in winter?

Improper watering of poinsettia causes root rot

The main reason is that it is inappropriate to call someone. Poinsettia is sensitive to water and has different water requirements in different growth stages. In winter, water evaporates slowly and the amount of water required is not large, but flowering requires increased humidity, which often leads people to misunderstand and cause excessive watering, resulting in water accumulation in the pot. The roots cannot breathe properly due to waterlogging, which causes root rot.

In fact, what poinsettia needs to bloom is not water, but higher humidity, and watering cannot meet the needs. During the winter flowering period, water appropriately, do not increase the amount of water intentionally, just spray frequently.

Poinsettia soil discomfort causes root rot

The soil for growing poinsettias is very important. It requires good drainage and is fertile. It is best to use artificial media. If the soil you choose is too sticky and has poor air permeability, the water cannot be discharged in time after watering. In addition, the uneven distribution of nutrients in the soil will also lead to poor root growth of poinsettia.

Poinsettia pests and diseases causing root rot

Poinsettias are prone to diseases and pests if not properly maintained, especially root-knot nematodes, which seriously affect the growth of the roots. The pests will absorb nutrients from the soil, destroy the roots, and cause root rot. Additionally, poinsettias are often infected with root rot, a fungal infection that causes the roots to rot.

If pests and diseases are found, it is recommended to change the soil in time. The original soil can be disinfected and replanted. If the root rot is serious, the rotten part can be removed and replanted. If the roots of the poinsettia rot when it is blooming, you can cut off all the flowers, replant them, strengthen maintenance, and wait for them to bloom next year.
