Reasons and solutions for osmanthus not blooming

When osmanthus flowers bloom, their fragrance spreads and the aroma permeates the entire courtyard, making it very popular among people. Nowadays, not only in the south, but also in many areas in the north, sweet-scented osmanthus has begun to be planted. Whether in the home courtyard or on the balcony, people like to place a few pots of osmanthus for appreciation. However, the osmanthus trees raised by many friends just do not bloom. Let’s learn together the reasons and solutions for why osmanthus does not bloom.

1. Reasons why osmanthus does not bloom

1. The temperature is too high

Osmanthus has a strong adaptability to temperature, but will also be affected by extreme climatic conditions. High temperature environments can easily cause problems such as leaf curling and flower falling.

2. Insufficient light

Osmanthus is a long-day plant that likes sunlight. If the potted flowers are placed in a shaded place for a long time during their growth and development, insufficient light will cause the plants to grow tall, soft and weak, and the leaves will become pale and yellow, affecting the differentiation of flower buds and resulting in no flowering.

3. Improper fertilization

Too much nitrogen fertilizer is applied to osmanthus during the growing period, while less phosphorus fertilizer is applied during the bud stage to promote flower bud differentiation and formation. The plant is prone to excessive growth and excessive vegetative growth, which affects flower bud differentiation and easily results in less or no flowering.

4. Overwatering

Osmanthus is afraid of stagnant water. Excessive watering during the winter dormancy period and the growing season, and frequent water accumulation in the flowerpots, can easily cause root rot and leaf fall, causing the plant branches to grow thin and weak, seriously affecting flowering.

5. Improper management

If potted osmanthus is not repotted or the soil is not changed for a long time, the soil will be deficient in nutrients, and the roots will be tangled and unable to stretch, which will make it difficult for the roots to absorb nutrients, and also affect flowering.

6. Pest and disease damage

Osmanthus is susceptible to diseases and pests such as anthracnose and scale insects. If not controlled in time, its flowering will also be affected.

2. Solution

1. Ensure dormancy

When growing osmanthus in winter, the temperature should be kept at around 3-5℃, allowing it to fully hibernate in a low temperature environment to facilitate growth and flowering in the next year.

2. Supplement nutrients

Osmanthus likes fertilizer and should be fertilized regularly, especially during the growing period, apply compound fertilizer or organic fertilizer every half a month to promote plant growth. Switch to phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in the early stage of flowering.

3. Increase lighting

Osmanthus should be moved to a place with sufficient light and ensure that it receives at least 10 hours of light a day to promote flower bud differentiation and flowering.

4. Water properly

Follow the principle of watering when the soil is dry and keep it moist, avoid waterlogging and excessive dryness, and keep the soil moderately moist.

5. Prune at the right time

After the osmanthus flowers fade, prune away the sick, weak and overcrowded branches to promote the growth of new branches and the formation of flower buds.

6. Prevent and control pests and diseases

Discover and deal with pests and diseases in a timely manner to keep the plants healthy and avoid affecting flowering.

If the soil is alkaline or compacted, the soil should be improved and organic fertilizer should be added to provide a suitable growing environment. Through the above method, the problem of osmanthus not blooming can be effectively solved and its normal flowering can be promoted.
