How to plant pepper seeds?

Chili peppers are grown in many places in China, and most growers use chili pepper seeds to grow them, but this step is very critical. If not handled properly, the seeds may not germinate easily. So how to grow chili pepper seeds? Let’s take a look below.

1. How to plant pepper seeds?

1. The planting time of peppers should be determined according to local climatic conditions. Because peppers like heat, it is most suitable to sow them in spring and early summer, and the best sowing period is March to July. If you sow the peppers early, they will grow fuller and produce more peppers.

2. In spring, peppers are cultivated in open fields with mulch covering and seedling transplanting method is adopted. When sowing in the seedbed, the sowing amount should be controlled at 8 to 10 grams per square meter. Before sowing, make a seedling bed with the prepared nutrient soil and water the soil thoroughly before sowing. The water is required to penetrate into the 30 cm soil layer. After the water seeps down, cover it with 3 to 5 mm thick nutrient soil and you can sow.

3. Mix the seeds with an appropriate amount of fine sand, and sow them in the seedbed at a rate of 8 to 10 grams of dry seeds per square meter. Cover them with 1 to 2 cm of nutrient soil after sowing and press them down slightly. You can also sow them directly in the hole tray, with 1 seed in each hole. Finally, cover the seedbed with plastic film and, if necessary, add other covering materials at night to increase temperature and retain moisture to facilitate emergence of seedlings.

2. Pepper planting technology and pest prevention methods

1. Soil selection and improvement

Peppers grow best in fertile, loose, well-drained soil. Before planting, you can improve the soil by applying fertilizers, tilling the land , and plowing to increase soil fertility and air permeability.

2. Reasonable fertilization

Peppers need sufficient nutrients to grow, so reasonable fertilization is needed during the planting process. You can apply base fertilizer before planting, and then apply top dressing at appropriate times during the growth process. But be careful not to over-fertilize, so as not to cause the plant to grow too lush and affect the quality of the fruit.

3. Pest and disease control

There are many diseases and pests of peppers, the most common ones are powdery mildew, scab, leaf mold, whitefly, etc. Biological control, physical control and chemical control can be used to prevent and control pests and diseases. Among them, biological control and physical control are relatively environmentally friendly methods, and can be carried out using plant protection agents, yellow boards, yellow water, etc.

4. Water at the right time

Peppers like a humid environment, but excessive watering can cause root hypoxia, root rot and other problems. Therefore, it is necessary to water the plants at the right time during the planting process to avoid over- or under-watering.

5. Picking at the right time

The color of pepper fruits gradually changes from green to red. The redder the fruit color, the spicier it is. Therefore, when picking, you need to choose according to the color of the fruit to avoid picking too early or too late.
