How to care for the newly bought Paphiopedilum

How to care for the newly bought Paphiopedilum

1. Prefers semi-shade

You should know that wild Paphiopedilum grows under woods that can block the scorching sun, so Paphiopedilum prefers a semi-shaded environment. It is best to place it in a place with sufficient scattered light when growing it at home, and never expose it to direct sunlight. Only in winter when the light is soft can it be exposed to direct sunlight.

2. Like warmth

The most suitable growth temperature for Paphiopedilum is 18-25℃. It is particularly afraid of freezing. Most Paphiopedilum can only withstand low temperatures of 5-12℃. Only a few native species can withstand low temperatures of 0-5℃, so the Paphiopedilum must be moved indoors for maintenance in winter.

3. Likes moisture

Paphiopedilum likes moisture, and the plant does not have a pseudobulb that can store water, so you can water it when you observe that the soil surface is dry. The air is dry in summer, so you should spray water on the leaves and surrounding areas of the plants frequently to increase humidity. In winter, when the temperature is low, water less and keep the soil in the pot slightly dry.

4. Prefer thin fertilizer

Paphiopedilum likes fertilizer and should be fertilized once a month during the growing season. The concentration of fertilizer and water should be light, and the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium elements should be balanced. Do not apply nitrogen fertilizer exclusively. Before flowering, switch to phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to promote flowering of the plants. The concentration should also be light, and it is best to apply thin fertilizers frequently. Stop fertilizing in winter when the temperature is low.

5. Notes

Paphiopedilum likes water but is afraid of waterlogging, so when growing Paphiopedilum at home, it is best to use a super breathable clay pot to plant it, which can effectively prevent waterlogging and root rot. You should also spray water on the plants frequently to increase humidity, but do so under the premise of good ventilation to prevent the roots and leaves of the Paphiopedilum from rotting.
