White melon is a common variety of melon. It has a sweet taste, thick flesh, and rich juice. It is also rich in vitamins, organic acids, minerals and other ingredients, and is very popular among consumers in the market. So what are the planting techniques and management of white melon? Let’s learn more about it below. 1. Variety selection When planting, it is recommended to choose white melon varieties with vigorous plants, high fruit set rate and good commercial quality. For example, Elizabeth, Yu Nai Xiang No. 2, Baishan Honey No. 2, Platinum Honeydew Melon, Crisp Pear Melon, etc. 2. Sowing time If it is cultivated in a greenhouse , the sowing time is in late February every year. If it is planted outdoors, sowing is done around March to April. 3. Seed treatment The seeds are cleaned of impurities, inferior seeds and chaff, and then dried and processed. Sterilize the seeds by soaking them in 500-600 times dilution of thiophanate-methyl or carbendazim for 15 minutes, remove them and wash them in clean water, and soak them in 15% trisodium phosphate solution for 30 minutes to inactivate the virus. Then soak the seeds in 50-60℃ warm water, stir to 30℃, let them soak for 6-8 hours, take them out and wipe off the water on the seed coat, wrap the seeds in layers with clean coarse cloth, and place them at a constant temperature of 30-32℃ for germination. After 24-30 hours when the radicle emerges, you can sow the seeds. 4. Sowing and seedling raising Generally, seedlings can be grown in plug trays, and the optimal size of the plug tray is 50 holes. When sowing, use a hole presser to press down evenly at the center of each hole (you can use your hand to press when the sowing amount is small) to form a sowing hole 0.5 cm deep in the center of each hole. Sow 1 seed in each hole. Remember to make sure the seeds are placed flat. 5. Planting at the right time Generally, after the seedlings have grown for about thirty days and have grown at least three leaves, they can be transplanted. Since melons have a strong ability to absorb nutrients through their roots, they are more suitable for growing in places with deep and fertile soil. Before planting, the land needs to be plowed and leveled, and fertilizer needs to be applied so that the fertilizer can be mixed with the soil as quickly as possible. After that, you can make ridges or furrows on the prepared land, and make higher ridges when planting in a greenhouse. When planting, you can dig trenches on the ridge surface or in small beds to plant seedlings, water them, and then cover them with soil and a layer of plastic film to keep them warm. The standard for planting density is generally: row spacing 0.6-0.5 meters, plant spacing 0.5 meters, and planting seven to eight hundred plants per acre is enough. 6. Field management After the white melons are planted, temperature and humidity management should be strengthened to promote early germination and rapid growth of seedlings, promote flower bud differentiation, and facilitate melon setting. In addition, attention should be paid to timely pruning, regulating plant growth and development, and promoting more and larger melons. At the same time, timely prevention and control of diseases and insects, and good fertilization and weeding should be done to improve yield and quality. In general, the planting techniques and management of white melons are similar to those of ordinary melons. Just pay attention to the early variety selection and seed treatment. Subsequently, corresponding production management work should be carried out according to the characteristics of the variety, so that white melons can be grown well.
