How to store sweet potatoes

How to store sweet potatoes

Like sweet potatoes and cabbage , people in northern China would stockpile them as winter vegetables. When you buy sweet potatoes, you must know how to preserve them. If you use the wrong method, the sweet potatoes will easily become moldy, rot or sprout. So how to preserve sweet potatoes? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Newspaper storage

Wrap each sweet potato with newspaper and place it in a cool and dry place, mainly to block out light and provide ample air circulation, which can effectively prevent the sweet potatoes from rotting or sprouting.

2. Carton storage

Prepare a cardboard box, preferably with a layer of foam blocks underneath, and then prepare an old towel and spread it in the cardboard box. Place the sweet potatoes evenly in the cardboard box, leaving some distance between them and not placing them close to each other. After arranging them, cover them with the other end of the towel. The storage temperature of sweet potatoes is generally around 15℃. Cover the carton and store it in a cool and dry place.

3. Refrigerator

Wrap the sweet potatoes completely with plastic wrap, then expel the air inside. The moisture on the surface of the sweet potatoes wrapped with plastic wrap is not easy to evaporate. Finally, put them in a clean bag, expel the air, and store them directly in the refrigerator.

4. Cellar storage

Cellar storage is a relatively common method for preserving sweet potatoes, which is suitable for preserving large quantities of sweet potatoes. First, you need to dig a cellar on the ground. The depth of the cellar should be 1-1.5 meters, and the width and length can be determined according to your needs. After digging the cellar, store the sweet potatoes in the cellar. Be careful to maintain the appropriate temperature and humidity in the cellar to prevent the sweet potatoes from getting damp, moldy or sprouting.

5. Make sweet potato chips

Making sweet potatoes into dried ones is also a very good storage method. They taste sweet and delicious and are particularly durable. The method is to wash the sweet potatoes, cut them into sections, steam them, peel them, and cut them into small sections. Then place it on a drying net and dry it in the sun for 1 to 2 days, turning it upside down several times during the drying process so that every side can get sunlight. When the moisture in the dried sweet potato strips becomes less and less, and until they are dry, they can be stored.

In general, there are many ways to preserve sweet potatoes, and you can choose a simple and easy method according to your own habits. However, you must pay attention to maintaining appropriate environmental temperature and humidity, regularly check the condition of the stored sweet potatoes, and dispose of any problematic sweet potatoes in a timely manner.
