How to prune grapes after flowering and fruiting

How to prune grapes after flowering and fruiting

1. How to prune flowering plants

1. Pinching: Before flowering, the newly grown branches should be pinched, and the pinched part is generally about 10 cm long. During its growth period, the tendrils should be cleaned off, which can save nutrient consumption and benefit the growth of branches and later fruits. When pinching, all side vines must also be handled.

2. Pick off the flower spikes: The nutrition of grapes themselves is limited. If there are too many flower spikes, they should be picked off in time so that the remaining fruit spikes can absorb enough nutrients and maintain better growth. Generally, only one inflorescence should be left on each fruiting branch, and the rest should be removed. Ten days before flowering, cut off the side spikes and edge spikelets, leaving only 13-20 spikelets in the middle. If they are not pruned, they will grow too densely and not all of them will bear fruit. Instead, they will consume a lot of nutrients.

2. How to prune after fruiting

Wait until the flowers fall before processing the grapes for fruiting, which is about a week after flowering. At this time, the grapes are about the size of mung beans. Weakly growing berries, berries inside the bunches, and berries on the top of the bunches should be cut off, leaving 40-120 berries in each bunch. This way, the weight of the ripe grape bunches can be stabilized at 300-1200 grams, ensuring uniformity of the bunches. In addition, you can cut off 1/4 of the inflorescence tip when the fruit bunch grows to 15-20 cm. This can save nutrients, facilitate fruit growth, and achieve a better yield.
