When is the best time to take cuttings of osmanthus trees in the north? How to take cuttings?

1. Cutting time

Its cuttings are usually chosen in spring and autumn. The climate in the northern region is colder, so the specific time is a little later. The best time to do this in spring is between May and June. The autumn season should be between September and October. The warmth in these two time periods can better meet the rooting needs and increase the possibility of survival. Note that it should not be too early in spring or too late in autumn, otherwise the temperature will be too low to be conducive to rooting and management will be inconvenient.

2. Cutting method

1. Processing of cuttings: When taking cuttings, choose branches that are free of diseases and insect pests, remove the lower leaves and only keep the upper ones. It is best to cut the bottom into an oblique shape so that it can absorb water better. After processing, soak it in rooting water for 10 minutes, which will help it take root faster.

2. Prepare the soil: The substrate for cuttings must be breathable, water-permeable and highly loose. You can mix it yourself with river sand, garden soil, and leaf mold, and the pH value should be slightly acidic. Alkaline or too sticky is not conducive to rooting.

3. Insert the cuttings into the soil: Be careful not to insert the cuttings too deep into the soil. After insertion, be careful to compact the soil to avoid the cuttings tilting. It is also necessary to water and moisten it in time. If the temperature is unstable, it is recommended to cover it with plastic film to keep it moist and warm. Just ventilate it frequently in the later stage. As long as it is managed properly, the survival rate can reach 90%.
