The first catastrophe - low temperatureAlthough succulents sound fleshy and resistant to cold, they are just fat for show. The weather is cold in winter and if you are not careful, you can easily get frostbite or freeze to death. For most succulents, the maintenance temperature in winter cannot be lower than 5℃. It is best to keep the indoor temperature above 15℃ so that the succulents can grow as usual. If the indoor temperature is low, we can keep the succulents in a foam box, or set up a simple warm shed for them, and open it for ventilation at noon every day. The second disaster: too much waterThe worst thing about growing succulents in winter is overwatering, especially low temperatures + too much water, which is definitely a fatal blow to succulents, causing their roots to rot in minutes and they cannot be saved even if you want to! If the maintenance temperature is higher than 15℃, we can water it thoroughly every 7 to 10 days. For example, Yaoyao's family has heating in winter, and watering it once a week will allow the succulents to safely survive the winter. If the indoor temperature is between 10℃ and 15℃, we can water it thoroughly once every 15 to 20 days. If the temperature is between 5℃ and 10℃, there is no need to water it thoroughly, just give a small amount of water along the edge of the pot. Note: In winter, watering should be done at noon when the weather is clear and the temperature is high, and the water temperature should not be too cold. You can dry it in the sun for one day in advance to make the water temperature consistent with the soil temperature. The Third Tribulation - No LightWhen growing succulents in winter, Yaoyao's first feeling is cold, and the second feeling is lack of light. Insufficient light will make the succulents smaller and all green without any color. If it is too large, the succulents will grow too tall and become towering monkeys. Therefore, in winter, you can let succulents be exposed to the sun as long as possible. For the health of succulents, please cherish the sunlight. (There is no place to stand on Yaoyao's south balcony) If there is insufficient light at home and conditions permit, you can provide the succulents with a few full-spectrum fill lights. It is best to provide them with continuous illumination for 8 to 10 hours a day. If the heating temperature at home is high but there is not enough sunlight, and you don’t want to use fill lights to add light, Yaoyao suggests that you water less to prevent the succulents from growing too tall. The fourth disaster - thick fatThe temperature is low in winter, and many succulents are in a dormant state. Yaoyao would like to remind everyone here not to fertilize succulents. Even if the temperature at home is high, do not apply concentrated fertilizer. If the maintenance temperature is above 15℃, we can apply a little bit of light organic fertilizer every 20 to 30 days. If the temperature is below 15℃, do not apply fertilizer. Saving your life is the most important thing. |
