How to prune roses in winter

1. Preparation for pruning

Before pruning roses in winter, you must prepare professional knives. It is best if they are sharp enough, and they must be sterilized before use. Before pruning, you should take a basic look at the branches you want to prune so that you don't prune blindly. The time for pruning is usually between December and February of the following year, and it will not affect the plants during this period.

2. Pruning methods

The main thing is to prune away weak branches, dry branches, overlapping branches, and branches with diseases and insect pests that are not growing well, just cut them directly from the base. The correct pruning method is to select a position 5mm above a good strong bud and make an oblique cut parallel to the bud point. The oblique cut should be in the opposite direction of the bud point.

When pruning strong branches, just gently cut off the top. If you prune too heavily, it will affect the growth of flower buds. When pruning strong branches, you should keep a height of at least 10cm. Generally, you should keep a height of about 10-20m when pruning strong branches. If you are pruning overlapping branches, be sure to cut off the weak branches and keep the stronger branches.
