How to propagate hibiscus by cuttings and precautions

Hibiscus, commonly known as hibiscus, has a long flowering period and prefers a warm and sunny environment. If the temperature and light conditions required for its growth are guaranteed, hibiscus can be evergreen and bloom all year round. Hibiscus can be propagated by cuttings. Once you have learned the cutting method, you can use a branch to propagate a new hibiscus plant.

Cutting time of hibiscus

Hibiscus cuttings can be carried out in spring, summer and autumn . As long as the temperature is kept above 10℃ , the hibiscus cuttings can survive. Generally, it is best to choose spring for cuttings at home, as the survival rate is higher than in other seasons.

How to propagate hibiscus by cuttings

1. Soil

To prepare soil that is highly breathable and well-drained , it is recommended to use river sand directly or mix river sand with garden soil, so that the soil is less sticky and less likely to clump.

2. Branches

It is recommended to choose 1-2 year old branches , which are already woody, not as fragile as young branches, and easier to prune than old branches. Keep the length about 8 cm, and except for 2-3 leaves on the top, remove all the other leaves to avoid excessive consumption of nutrients.

3. Disinfection

In order to improve the survival rate of the plants, you can soak the branches in carbendazim or diluted potassium permanganate solution for about 10 minutes before cutting to kill the bacteria on the cut. Then place it in a ventilated place to dry, and then you can officially start cutting.

4. Cuttings

After spreading the soil in the flowerpot, you can use chopsticks to poke a few small holes in the soil to facilitate the placement of branches. At the same time, it should be noted that the depth of the branches buried in the soil should be half of the entire branch . Too deep or too shallow is not conducive to the development of the plant. In addition, remember to compact the soil after cutting to play a role in fixing.

Things to note after hibiscus cuttings

After the hibiscus cuttings are completed , avoid direct sunlight to avoid affecting the survival of the branches. Place it in a cool and ventilated place for about 10 days to allow the seedlings to grow slowly. Then you can slowly increase the light and move it to a place with scattered light. At the same time, you can water it according to the dryness and wetness of the soil , just keep the soil slightly moist.
