How to plant yam in pots when it sprouts How to plant yam in pots when it sprouts

Yam is a very delicious medicinal food ingredient. It can strengthen the stomach and spleen, and regular consumption is very good for the body. Sometimes we buy yams and cannot finish them, so there are leftovers, or we forget about them. After a long time, they will sprout. They cannot be eaten after sprouting, but can be planted directly in a flowerpot and maintained like a plant.

The germination period of yam segments is relatively long, lasting 40-50 days. The period from the appearance of buds to the flowering and further formation of buds is 50-60 days. The tuber enlargement period from budding and flowering to stem and leaf growth is basically stable, lasting 60-80 days.

How to plant yam after it sprouts

1. Processing of seedlings

If the yam sprouts, you can break it into several small pieces, each with new sprouts, and place it in a well-ventilated place to dry the wound thoroughly before preparing for planting. If the yam segment does not sprout, you can find a plastic bag to put the yam segment in, sprinkle some water in the bag to promote rapid germination.

2. Prepare the soil

Prepare loose, fertile and breathable nutrient soil. You can use garden soil with farmyard manure in the vegetable field to plant yam. If you live in a city, it is recommended to directly purchase nutrient soil specifically for growing vegetables. Never use soil for community greening, as much of it is construction waste.

3. Planting in the soil

Use tools to loosen the soil in advance, then place the yam segments on the surface of the soil with the buds facing up, cover with a layer of fine soil, and leave the buds slightly exposed above the soil surface. Gently compact the soil with your hands and water it thoroughly once.

4. Post-planting maintenance

After planting, the yam can be placed in a well-ventilated place with scattered light, and the soil can be kept slightly moist at all times. After the yam sprouts and emerges from the soil, it can be placed in a place with good light. As the plant grows, a support can be built for the yam to allow it to climb and grow. Then wait for it to mature and harvest the yam segments and yam beans.
