Camellia cutting time and method

Camellia cutting time

Camellia cuttings are usually chosen for September because the temperature is suitable at this time and the cuttings are easy to survive. In summer, the temperature is high and the roots are prone to rot. In winter, the temperature is low and the growth is slow, affecting its survival.

Camellia cutting method

1. Prepare potting soil

The soil base for camellia cuttings requires strong water retention, good air permeability, good drainage, and it must be acidic. It can be mixed with leaf mold, an appropriate amount of sand and peat soil to help enhance its drainage.

2. Prepare cuttings

Select healthy and disease-free semi-woody branches about one year old from a sturdy mother plant as cuttings. The cuttings should be about 7-12 cm long. Remove the leaves at the lower end of the cuttings and make an oblique cut at the lower end. Leave 4 large leaves on the upper end and cut off two-thirds of them. Leave the small leaves unchanged.

3. Carry out cuttings

Use chopsticks to insert into the prepared soil to a depth of 5 cm, and insert the processed branches. There is no need to water directly after cuttings. Just spray a small amount of water to keep the soil moist. Place it in a cool and ventilated place and wait until it takes root and sprouts before transplanting.

Camellia cutting maintenance

While waiting for the camellia cuttings to survive, the soil needs to be kept moist and the temperature should be controlled at 18-24℃. Don't be impatient when propagating camellia cuttings. The speed at which the cuttings take root will vary depending on the environment. Sometimes new roots can grow in about three weeks, and sometimes it may take longer.
