How to prune grapefruit trees?

Grapefruit tree pruning time

Pomelo trees are pruned every two years, and the best time to do so is in spring and after the harvest. This is because spring pruning can control the growth of branches and allow them to produce more flowers, while pruning the branches after the harvest will not affect the harvest, and can save nutrients for the plant and improve the quality of the fruit.

How to prune grapefruit trees

1. Prepare tools

Before pruning a pomelo tree, prepare sterilized special scissors, clean wood ash, and diluted potassium permanganate solution and carbendazim solution in advance.

2. Pinching and topping

The most critical pruning task in the early growth of pomelo trees is pinching and topping, which can control the height of the plant and allow it to sprout more side branches. Therefore, pinching and topping are necessary. The most vigorous branches at the top are cut off and continuously pruned to control it at a fixed height.

3. Thinning and shaping branches

If you want the pomelo tree to grow well and ensure the quality of the fruit it produces, thinning and shaping pruning is also necessary. All useless branches such as overgrown branches, overlapping branches, crossed branches, horizontal branches, sick and weak branches growing on the plant should be cut off to allow the plant to have good ventilation and light transmission to ensure the growth and development of the plant.

4. Post-maintenance

After pruning, the wounds of the grapefruit tree need to be disinfected. You can apply wood ash or diluted potassium permanganate solution on the wounds, which can promote wound healing and increase the growth rate of the plant.
