What are the suitable places for growing pepper trees?

Pepper tree planting conditions

Sichuan pepper has a strong drought resistance and can generally grow well under conditions where the annual precipitation is above 500 mm and is evenly distributed. In areas where the annual precipitation is below 500 mm and there is less precipitation before June, watering once before germination and after fruit setting can ensure normal growth and fruiting of Sichuan pepper.

Climate for growing pepper trees

Zanthoxylum bungeanum has a wide range of adaptability to temperature and can be cultivated in places with an annual average temperature of 8-16 degrees. It is best cultivated in places with an annual average temperature of 10-14 degrees. When the average temperature in spring is stable at above 6 degrees, the buds begin to sprout, and germinate and grow at around 10 degrees. The suitable temperature for flowering is 16-18℃, and the suitable temperature for fruit growth and development is 20~25℃. It has a certain degree of cold resistance.

Pepper tree planting area

For planting Sichuan pepper, choose sandy land with fertile soil, good drainage, sufficient water source, a certain slope, and sheltered from the wind and facing the sun. It is not tolerant of waterlogging. Excessive soil moisture content and poor drainage will affect the growth and fruiting of Sichuan pepper, so it is not suitable to be planted in low-lying areas.

Zanthoxylum bungeanum trees are distributed in both the north and south of China. They are widely planted from the southern part of the Northeast to the northern slope of the Wuling Mountains, from the southeast to Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, and from the southwest to southeastern Tibet. They are not produced in Taiwan, Hainan and Guangdong.

Planting time of pepper tree

Sichuan pepper is mainly grown by sowing and seedling raising, which is usually carried out from July to September in summer and autumn. Sowing can be done in spring and autumn, and the spring sowing time is generally around the "vernal equinox".

Benefits of Planting Pepper Trees

Zanthoxylum bungeanum has high medicinal value and can be used as a traditional Chinese medicine. It has the effects of relieving pain, killing insects, warming the middle and promoting qi, and expelling cold. It can treat stomach and abdominal cold pain, vomiting, diarrhea, schistosomiasis, ascariasis and other symptoms. It can also be used as a skin anesthetic. The prospects for its cultivation are very promising.
