How to propagate lilies?

Lily is a flower loved by many people from ancient times to the present. It has elegant flowers, slender stems and high ornamental value. So how do you propagate lilies? Let’s learn how to propagate lilies.

1. Scale reproduction

In autumn, select healthy, disease-free, hypertrophic scales and soak them in a 1:500 aqueous solution of benomyl or captan for 30 minutes. Take them out and dry them in the shade. Insert 1/3-2/3 of the scales into fertile sandy loam with the base facing down, with a density of 3-4x15 cm, and cover with grass to provide shade and keep moisture. About 20 days later, 1-2 small bulbs will be formed at the cut at the lower end of the scale. After 2-3 years of cultivation, the bulbs can weigh up to 50 grams.

2. Bulb propagation

Multiple new small bulbs can grow on the stem axis of the old bulb. Collect the small bulbs from disease-free plants, disinfect them and sow them in rows with a spacing of 25 cm × 6 cm. After one year of cultivation, some of them can reach the bulb standard (50 grams), and the smaller ones need to be cultivated for another year before being used as seeds.

3. Bulbous propagation

The bulbils are harvested in summer when they mature, mixed with moist spun yarn and stored in a cool and ventilated place. From September to October of the same year, sow the bulbils on the seedbed with a row spacing of 12-15 cm and a depth of 3-4 cm, cover with 3 cm of fine soil and cover with grass.

4. Division propagation

When the buds mature in the summer, collect them, wrap them in moist fine sand, and place them in a cool environment. When autumn comes, you can plant them in the soil prepared in advance. Note that the depth should be about 3 or 4 centimeters, and the distance between each row should be 12 to 15. After planting, spread a layer of fine soil on it and cover it with a straw mat.

5. Seed propagation

This is the only method of sexual reproduction. After the lily fruit cracks, there will be many seeds inside. Collect these seeds and sow them on the seedbed in the spring or autumn of next year. Control the temperature between 12-15 degrees Celsius and they will germinate in 20-30 days.
