When to prune cedar

It is usually more appropriate to prune cedars in the transition between spring and summer each year. After pruning, the length of the branches can be controlled, the crown can be expanded, the balance of the crown can be adjusted, the thickening of the branches can be promoted, the dominance of the branch tips can be changed, and the shape and size of the crown can be controlled.

How to prune cedar branches

Mild pruning : This is the pruning method that causes the least damage to cedar. It only requires cutting off branches about 1/3 of the plant's length. This pruning method is more conducive to the growth of branches and has less overall impact on the branches.

Moderate pruning : Compared with mild pruning, the pruning length is longer, about half the length. The purpose of moderate pruning is to help the branches develop further, mainly benefiting the branches in the middle and lower parts.

Heavy pruning : This is not common in cedar pruning. It requires pruning off about 2/3 of the branches. Heavy pruning has a great stimulating effect on the plant, so try not to choose heavy pruning.

Cedar Pruning Tips

Because the lateral branches of cedar are arranged in irregular whorls, with large numbers and small spacing, the nutrient distribution is uneven and the growth of each lateral branch is often very uneven. Therefore, when pruning, it is required to arrange the lateral branches in layers on the main trunk, and pay attention to protecting the new shoots, while removing dense branches, thin branches, and diseased and insect-infested branches.
