How to get sunflower seeds

The sunflower belongs to the Asteraceae family. It can grow to a height of about 1-3 meters. It is relatively sturdy and usually blooms in summer. Its seeds are usually inside the flower head. They are relatively numerous, black, and very small. They are usually called melon seeds.

Sunflower seeds

The seeds of sunflowers are in the flowers. When the sunflowers wither, there will be small seeds in its flower heads. Its flowering period is around May to September. Half a month after the flowers wither, the seeds will gradually mature, the capsule cover will crack, and there will be relatively many black seeds inside. Then they can be harvested, dried and preserved.

Sunflower seed storage

After harvesting, the sunflower seeds need to be dried in the sun and then stored in a cool place with good ventilation. A relatively dry environment is needed during storage. They can be sown in March or April of the following year.

Sunflower seed planting

Sunflower seeds can generally be sown in spring, summer and autumn. Normally, they can be planted when the minimum temperature is around 18°C. Sandy soil with good drainage is required. When planting, the soil needs to be kept moist and exposed to sufficient sunlight.
