How to propagate Desert Rose

How to propagate Desert Rose

1. Cutting method

When taking cuttings for Desert Rose, spring and summer are the best time because the climate is stable at that time. First, cut one-year-old branches that are about ten centimeters long, preferably the top ones. Soak them in rooting water for thirty seconds, insert them into a soil base mixed with river sand and sawdust, place them in a cool place, and wait for them to take root. You don't need to water it too much during this period, just keep the soil moist. After it takes root, you can transplant it into the pot.

2. Layering method

The time for layering is also in spring and summer, because this is the growing season of Desert Rose. At this time, the survival rate is better when propagated by layering. When performing the layering method, you first need to use a sterilized blade to cut the plant where it takes root, or ring-peel that section of bark, wrap the injured area tightly with sphagnum moss or soil, and then wrap it with film, tie both ends tightly, and it will slowly take root. When you see the roots grow to the film, cut them off and you can plant them.

3. Seeding method

Desert rose seeds are difficult to collect because they burst open when they mature and the seeds are very small and difficult to pick up. So collect the seeds before it bursts. There is no set time for sowing, as long as the weather is warm, you can sow. When sowing, sprinkle the seeds into a soil culture medium composed of river sand and expanded clay, then cover with three centimeters of soil, water in small amounts to keep the soil moist, then put them in a cool place and wait for them to germinate. After the seedlings come out, pull out the unhealthy and weak seedlings to make room and nutrients for the healthy seedlings. When the seedlings grow to about four centimeters, they can be planted in pots.
