legend

In ancient times, there was a young and handsome scholar who went to Beijing to take an imperial examination. It was already late, so he stayed overnight in a small roadside shop. The father and daughter who owned the store were very warm and attentive to him. The scholar was very grateful and stayed in the store for two more days. The scholar and the girl fell in love at first sight and decided to get married, but they were discovered by the store owner, who forcibly separated them. The girl eventually died of suffocation, while the scholar continued to fetch water and water the flowers every day without interruption.

A white-haired old man listened to the scholar's story, turned around, looked at the blooming lilac flowers on the grave, and said to the scholar, "The girl's answer has been revealed." The scholar hurried forward and asked, "Uncle, how do you know the second line of the girl's answer?" The old man stroked his beard, pointed to the lilac flowers on the grave and said, "This is the second line of the couplet."

The scholar was still puzzled, so the old man continued, "Ice-cold wine, one dot, two dots, three dots; lilac flowers, a hundred heads, a thousand heads, a symbol. The radicals of the three characters in your first couplet, 'ice', are one dot of water, 'cold' is two dots of water, and 'wine' is three dots of water. The radicals of the lilac flowers that the girl turned into are 'ding' for the hundred, 'xiang' for the thousand, and 'hua' for the ten thousand. The correspondence between the beginning and the end is ingenious.

In order to commemorate this pure and kind girl and respect her noble sentiment of steadfastness in love, later generations have regarded lilac as the flower of love, and purple lilac represents first love.
