How to propagate dragon wing begonia

How to propagate dragon wing begonia

1. Seed propagation

During the flowering period of the Dragon Wing Begonia, artificial pollination can be carried out to produce fruits and seeds, but the seeds obtained by artificial pollination are very small, and if used directly for planting, the germination rate is very low, so artificial pollination is generally not used. Generally, seed propagation uses seeds imported from abroad. Such seeds have full grains and the coating contains a lot of nutrients and fungicides, making them easier to germinate after sowing.

The seeds of Dragon Wing Begonia should be sown in spring and early autumn. The planting soil should be loose, fertile, slightly acidic soil. After placing the seeds in the soil holes, spray water to melt the coating, and then bury them. During the germination period, the soil should be kept moist and the temperature should be maintained at around 25℃. It will germinate in about half a month.

After the seedlings grow two leaves, the temperature needs to be lowered. Around 18-20℃ is more suitable for seedling growth. Gradually increase sunlight exposure, spray water frequently to keep the soil and leaves moist, and spray nitrogen liquid fertilizer once a week. The seedlings can be transplanted after they have five or six leaves.

2. Cutting propagation

It is best to use the cutting method for propagation in spring or autumn, because the summer is hot and humid, and the cuttings are easy to rot and difficult to survive. When taking cuttings, choose strong branches with terminal buds and two or three young leaves, about 15 cm in length, cut them near the nodes, and insert about half of the length of the branches into the soil. After that, place the flowerpot with the cuttings in a semi-shaded place, spray water frequently to keep the soil and leaves moist, and they will take root in about three weeks.

3. Tissue Culture and Propagation

Tissue culture propagation is the main propagation method of Malus multiflora. Generally, tender branches and leaves are used. After being washed and disinfected, they are cut into small sections about 1 cm long and added to the culture medium. After transformation and cultivation, complete seedlings are grown and then transplanted. After transplanting, place it in a semi-shaded place and keep it ventilated. The temperature should be maintained at around 25°C. Use water spraying to ensure moisture. After a week, gradually increase the light and nutrition. It can be potted in about forty days. The survival rate of dragon-wing begonia propagated by this method can reach over 95%.
