Detailed explanation of snapdragon cutting method

Snapdragon cutting selection

Pinch off the seeds when they are about 9 cm tall and have 8-10 true leaves. When pinching, leave 4-6 true leaves at the bottom, and pick off the tender head with 4 true leaves on the top, which can be used as cuttings for propagation.

Snapdragon substrate preparation

The cutting medium can be selected by adding two parts of sandy loam and one part of wood ash, mixing them thoroughly and then sifting them through a fine sieve. Rinse the seedling box or shallow seedling basin with water, then add the sifted coarse soil to about 2/3 of the height, then spread about 2 cm of fine soil on it, and spray water appropriately.

Snapdragon cutting method

When taking cuttings, first use a thin bamboo stick to make holes in the substrate, insert the cuttings while making holes, and gently compact the culture soil at the base of the cuttings with your fingers. The cutting density is about 2.5cmX3cm, and it is best if the leaves of the cuttings touch but do not overlap. After spraying enough water, place it in a cool place for maintenance.

Management of snapdragon after planting

After cuttings, spray water on the potting soil and cuttings about twice a day in the morning and evening to keep the potting soil moist. On cloudy days, there is generally no need to water. If the soil in the pot turns white, you can water it appropriately. At a temperature of 15-20℃, roots will generally emerge in about ten days. After rooting, the seedlings can be transplanted after they resume growth.

During the growing season, snapdragons often produce side shoots, at which time they can generally be propagated by cuttings as long as the temperature is suitable. Young shoots that are 3 cm long and have 4 leaves can usually survive by cuttings. The young heads that are pinched for the first time, after they survive by cuttings, if they are cultivated as a single plant, their flowering period will be basically the same as that of the mother plant.
