Methods and precautions for propagating Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe propagation techniques - cuttings

Kalanchoe is a herbaceous plant. It is simple and easy to propagate by branches and can be grown all year round. Just pay attention to keeping warm in winter. In the north, try to place the cuttings of Kalanchoe on a warm balcony and cover them with plastic bags to keep them warm.

Cutting steps:

1. Choose strong stalks of Kalanchoe

2. Use scissors to cut it into several small sections, each section containing two nodes, and remove the leaves at the lower nodes.

3. Insert the cuttings into the substrate. The substrate can be river sand, perlite or vermiculite.

4. Do not bury the leaves. Then water them enough and put them in a cool place. For later management, pay attention to alternating between dry and wet seasons when watering. It is better to keep the plant dry than wet to avoid rotting of the fleshy branches.

5. It will take two to three weeks to take root, and can be potted after about a month, and then it can be maintained and managed normally.

In addition, you can also cultivate them in water first, and then transfer them to soil after the cuttings take root. The method is the same and it is also very simple.

Kalanchoe propagation techniques - leaf cuttings

1. Pick off the leaves of the Kalanchoe, the bigger the better, and place them in a cool place to dry for several hours.

2. Prepare breathable nutrient soil, bury the petioles in the soil, and place it in a cool and ventilated place. Keep the soil moist.

3. The growth of Kalanchoe leaf cuttings is really slow. It takes 5-6 months for it to sprout, so you must be patient!

Kalanchoe pruning tips

Topping

When the cuttings of the Kalanchoe are successful and the plant grows to five or six centimeters, it is necessary to pinch the top of the Kalanchoe to eliminate apical dominance and promote the sprouting of side branches.

Topping

The time for topping is shorter than that for pinching. You can do topping when the plant grows to about 10 cm. Pick off the tender buds on the top and replant them by cuttings. In this way, you will get a new pot of Kalanchoe.
