How to prune passionflower

Passionflower Pruning

Summer pruning

The summer pruning time for passion fruit is generally between June and September.

For passion fruit plants with many branches, you can prune them after they bear fruit. Shortening the branches that have borne fruit can make their new branches stronger and more capable of bearing fruit.

The benefit of summer pruning is that it can prevent the branches of passion fruit from becoming too long or too dense, and reduce nutrient consumption and poor flowering of flowers.

Winter pruning

Winter pruning of passion fruit is carried out after the winter fruits are harvested, usually in mid-to-late February or early March.

Winter pruning is mainly heavy pruning, which is to shorten the main branches of the passion fruit, leaving only 30cm-60cm, and cut off the rest. In this way, the passion fruit can grow again in the spring and recover quickly.

The benefit of winter pruning is that it can reduce the pathogens of diseases and pests, and the pruning needs to be destroyed in time.

Passion fruit shaping techniques

Scaffolding and Guidance

When shaping passion fruit, the main thing is to set up a frame for guidance. When the passion fruit seedlings are growing rapidly, build a support so that the main branches of the passion fruit can grow along the support. You can also set up a wire rack to allow the passion fruit's side branches to grow in a spiral shape along the wire rack, and be sure to cut off the tops in time.

Plastic surgery

The shaping of passion fruit is carried out by combining pruning and trellising. When the branches of passion flower grow along the support, it is necessary to trim the excess branches and flower buds in time and trim them into a curtain shape to better utilize the space and allow light to pass through.
