How to propagate Rieger Begonia

How to propagate Rieger Begonia

Seed propagation

Seed propagation is a common method of plant propagation, and Begonia can also be propagated by sowing. However, since the seeds of Rieger Begonia are relatively small, a special method needs to be adopted when sowing - the small seed sowing method. When sowing Begonia, the sowing medium can be made by mixing vermiculite powder and peat soil. Stir the medium evenly, place it in the seedling pot, and water it thoroughly.

Sow the seeds of Begonia on the substrate, arranging them one by one. There is no need to cover them with soil. Wrap the seedling pot with transparent plastic film and keep the temperature at around 20 degrees. The seedlings will emerge in 2 weeks. As the seedlings grow, leaves will slowly grow, but do not remove the plastic film yet.

After the beginning of autumn, you can remove the plastic film and plant it in pots in early winter. Control watering before potting, and keep ventilation after potting. As the plant grows, you can change to a larger pot.

Cutting propagation method

The cutting propagation of Rieger Begonia mainly includes branch cutting method and leaf cutting method.

The substrate for cuttings is mainly vermiculite or clean sand, and the substrate needs to be disinfected before use. If you are using branch cuttings, choose suitable branches of moderate length and trim them. If you are using leaf cuttings, choose leaves with vigorous growth and remove them for later use.

Insert the cuttings into the substrate, water thoroughly, cover with plastic film and place in a cool and ventilated place. It will take about 3 weeks to take root. Allow it to grow for a period of time before transplanting.

Tissue culture method

The tissue culture method is to cultivate Rieger Begonia seedlings in a culture medium. Its characteristic is that it can be produced in large quantities. However, for flower lovers, tissue culture is difficult and is not commonly used.
