Rose cultivation methods and precautions

Rose is a shrub of the Rosaceae family. There are many varieties of it, and many people like to grow it at home. It is cold-resistant and drought-tolerant, and does not require squeamish planting and maintenance. It has charming flowers and can be found in flower beds, roadsides, and garden beautification. Here we talk about the rose cultivation methods and precautions.

1. Soil selection

The soil for growing roses requires loose, breathable, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Use one part garden soil, one part leaf mold, and one part sandy soil, mix them evenly for cultivation. When planting roses, sprinkle some decomposed cake fertilizer at the roots of the roses, about one centimeter away from the roots, and then cover with soil.

2. Lighting and ventilation

Rose is a plant that loves light and ventilation. It is suitable to be planted outdoors with good ventilation and full sunlight every day. If roses are not exposed to the sun for a long time, it will not only affect flowering but also make it easy to get black spot disease, root rot, powdery mildew, etc., and even cause the death of the plant.

3. Watering

Roses should be watered thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, or the soil in the pot should be kept slightly moist during the growing period, but not waterlogged. When planted in the ground, the drainage must be unobstructed. When planted in pots, try not to be exposed to rain every day during the rainy season, and remove the tray at the bottom of the pot to prevent water accumulation.

4. Fertilization and pruning

Roses have a long flowering period and bloom a lot, so they require a lot of fertilizer. They need to be fertilized once every week. It can be compound fertilizer , potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, or fertilizer such as Huaduoduo. After each blooming of roses, you should promptly trim off the withered flowers and overgrown branches, otherwise the nutrients in the flowerpot will be consumed so that more nutrients can be accumulated for the next flowering period. Moreover, each time the roses are pruned, more new buds will be distributed. If the nutrients are sufficient, there will be continuous new flowering periods.

5. Repotting

It is best to change the soil for roses once a year, because potted roses require a particularly large amount of fertilizer each year, and the limited trace elements in the flowerpots cannot be supplied to roses for a long time. Changing the soil every year will enhance the immunity of roses and reduce diseases and pests.

6. Reproduction

The main methods of rose propagation are cuttings, seeds, layering, grafting, etc. I mainly use cuttings propagation method, which has a high survival rate and simple method. The best time for cuttings is in early spring. You can select rose branches as soon as spring comes, cut about 10 cm with two or three buds, and cut them into the prepared seedbed. You don't have to worry about outdoor cuttings. When the earth recovers, the roses you cut will give you surprises.

Seed propagation: select mature rose seeds, do not put them in the sun to dry, plant them directly in the seedbed, keep the temperature above 20 degrees, keep the seedbed moist, and the seeds will germinate soon.

Layering propagation: can be carried out all year round.

Grafting propagation: First, select a good rose rootstock, and graft the healthy rose branches by means of approach grafting, side grafting, skim grafting, bud grafting, etc. Grafting can be done in spring, summer, and autumn. The newly grafted roses should not be exposed to rain or direct sunlight, and should be placed in a cool and ventilated place for maintenance.

7. Pests and diseases

Rose is commonly known as "medicine jar". Although rose is beautiful, it has many diseases and pests. Its pests usually include: red spider mites, aphids, stem bees, leaf-cutting bees, and scale insects. Diseases include: powdery mildew, leaf blight, root rot, black spot, etc., and attention should be paid to prevention and control.
