How to propagate peony by cuttings

How to propagate peony by cuttings

Cutting method

Preparation before cutting

First, you need to choose a good substrate. You can use vermiculite or perlite, but at home you can just choose ordinary soil and river sand. The soil must be disinfected before cuttings. Soak the soil in 0.5% potassium permanganate solution, take it out for about 30 minutes, and expose it to the sun to dry.

Select cuttings

Cut a branch from the mother plant, with a length of 10 to 15 cm. The branch should have two nodes, retain a few leaves at the top, and cut off the leaves at the base.

Cuttings

The base of the branches should be quickly dipped in naphthaleneacetic acid solution before cutting, with a depth of about 5 cm. The spacing is such that the blades do not touch each other.

After cuttings, water them sufficiently and cover them with plastic film to keep them moist. Control the temperature between 20~25℃ and the humidity at 80%~90%. It will take root 20~30 days after planting. After rooting, reduce the amount of spraying and watering and remove the plastic film. Cuttings seedlings grow relatively slowly. After the cuttings survive, they will first grow in the original container and then be potted in spring.

Root cutting method

Preparation before plugging in

The soil requirements are the same as for branch cuttings, but the materials for cuttings are slightly different. Root cuttings are made from rhizomes that are broken off during division, which can be considered a bargain. The limitation of this method is that unless you pull out some fibrous roots from the roots of the plant yourself, it is a bit impractical to propagate by breaking the roots by division.

How to operate

Root cuttings are carried out in combination with division in autumn. Cut off a 5-10 cm root segment, insert it into the soil, cover with 5-10 cm of fine soil, and then water it thoroughly.
