Anthurium propagation method

Anthurium propagation method

Propagation by division

Anthurium has a strong ability to tiller. When dividing the plant, the small and medium-sized side buds on the plant are separated from the mother plant, and the side buds are planted and slowly cultivated into new plants. The specific method is as follows:

Determine the time

The main period for division is the cool and humid spring, and it can also be divided in cool weather in autumn. Avoid dividing the plant in hot summer or dry and cold seasons.

Select lateral buds

When selecting side buds, you must pay attention to the principle of not damaging the mother plant. Do not separate side buds that are too large, too close, or too weak. Focus on separating side buds that are easier to separate from the mother plant, are relatively strong, and have at least two main root systems.

Disinfection of divisions

There are two ways to divide the plants: manually breaking them apart or cutting them off with a blade.

After division, the small plants should be disinfected.

Rooting

After the cut side buds have dried slightly, they should be transplanted in a cool place to promote root growth and resume growth. It can be planted after rooting. When planting, the roots must be spread out and the plants upright, and supported if necessary. Do not water immediately after planting, but spray water on the leaves to maintain moisture. After 2 days, you can water or apply dilute fertilizer solution depending on the situation.

Seed propagation

Sowing is the main way to obtain new varieties. The fruit of Anthurium is a berry and needs to be sown immediately after being picked.

Seed treatment

For freshly picked fruits, remove the peel and wash off the pulp to prevent the pulp from rotting and affecting seed germination. Of course, this step can be omitted if you buy seeds from a flower shop.

Germination

Use the germination method to plant, sow the seeds in clean river sand at a depth of 0.5~0.8 cm, ensure a certain soil moisture, it will germinate in about 15 days, and new leaves will grow soon.

Transplanting

When the seedlings grow 5 to 6 leaves, they can be transplanted into pots and a mixture of perlite and peat soil in a 1 : 2 ratio can be used.
