Maintenance of Amaryllis during winter dormancy

Tips for caring for Amaryllis during hibernation

Low temperature

Amaryllis is not cold-resistant, so it will enter a dormant period in winter. The main purpose of hibernation is to preserve the bulbs well. The temperature should be controlled at 5~10℃. If the temperature is lower than 5℃, the bulbs will easily be frozen. If the temperature is higher than 15℃, the plants will grow normally, but the bulbs will not get a rest, which will affect their growth in the second year.

Water Control

When amaryllis enters its dormant period, it basically stops growing. It does not need too many nutrients to grow on its own, and it just needs to stay from withering. Water must be strictly controlled during this period. Water about once every ten days to keep the soil surface moist. During these 10 days, do not water the plant even if it is dry. You can sprinkle some water around it to increase the air humidity.

Light

During the hibernation period of Amaryllis, only the bulb is in the soil, without leaves. It does not need to carry out photosynthesis to provide nutrients, and a little scattered light is enough. Try to place the plant on a balcony or windowsill where the light is bright and there is adequate shade.

Maintenance at the end of hibernation

The hibernation period of Amaryllis is two months, and it can be awakened at any time according to personal needs. The main method is: move the flower pot to a place with higher temperature (above 15℃), water it thoroughly, and after a few days, the new leaves of Amaryllis will sprout and it will wake up and grow normally. Apply a thin layer of fertilizer and water after one week. If you maintain it normally, flower buds will emerge soon.

Hibernation of Amaryllis

Overwintering bulbs

This is a more commonly used method.

Dig out the bulbs in October, wash and remove rotten stems and leaves, dry them naturally, and store them in sand in a dry and bright place indoors.

Overwintering in potted plants

Overwintering in potted plants is the easiest method.

In October, the leaves and stems of the potted plants wither, and the withered parts above the ground should be cleaned up. Move the potting soil to the greenhouse, keep the potting soil dry, and do not water it too much, otherwise the underground bulbs will easily rot.
