The propagation technology of nail orchid

The propagation technology of nail orchid

There are only two ways to propagate Nail Orchid: division and sowing.

Division

Division time

Division can be carried out in spring and autumn, usually once every three years.

Steps for division

Reduce watering before division and keep the soil in the pot relatively dry. Separate the plant from the potting soil.

Prune the plants, remove old leaves and rhizomes, and do not damage the root system.

Divide the plants into clumps, keeping at least 5 pseudobulbs in each clump.

Prepare the potting soil. Now put a layer of broken tiles at the bottom of the pot and cover it with a layer of coarse gravel. The two should occupy 1/5 to 1/4 of the pot. Put a small amount of fine soil on top and cover the surface with humus sand.

Next, prepare to pot it, bury the pseudobulbs in the soil, cover them with a layer of fine gravel, then water them thoroughly and place them in a cool place for about 10 days. Do not water them during this period and wait until the rhizomes grow normally and resume normal maintenance.

sowing

The survival rate of seed propagation is relatively low. Its seeds only contain an underdeveloped embryo, have low germination ability, and the seed coat does not easily absorb water, making it difficult to survive using conventional methods. Here’s how:

Choose fruits that have not cracked yet, sterilize them with alcohol first, and then remove the seeds.

Soak the seeds in 10% sodium chlorate solution for 5-10 minutes, take them out and rinse them with sterile water 2-3 times, and then place them in the culture medium for cultivation. ( ps: The so-called culture medium is fungus, it just sounds very professional. In fact, these materials can be bought at flower shops!)

Place the culture medium in a cool place at 25 °C, move it to the sun after germination, and gradually form the protocorm. You can transplant it now. This period of time will be relatively long, usually half a year or even a year before you can see a seedling.

It is not easy to appreciate orchids. During the process of sowing and dividing, every drop of your sweat is helping it grow! Don’t be stingy with your hard work, the flowers will feel it!
