1. Leaf Difference

The leaves of the five-leaf ginseng have 3 to 5 leaflets, vaguely 7, with a petiole 10 to 15 cm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, and leaflets that are papery or thinly leathery, elliptical-ovate, 6 to 12 cm long, 2.5 to 6 cm wide, with gradually tapering tips, rounded bases, and spiny serrations on the edges. The petioles of the leaflets are 3 to 10 mm long.

The leaves of Gynostemma pentaphyllum are membranous or papery, bird-foot-shaped, with 3 to 9 leaflets, usually 5 to 7. The petiole is 3 to 7 cm long. The leaflets are ovate-oblong or lanceolate, with wavy or crenate teeth on the edges, dark green on the upper side and light green on the back.

2. Flower Differences

Five-leaf ginseng has umbel-shaped panicles, which are terminal, with a diameter of 2 to 2.5 cm. The flowers are white, with 5 petals, about 2 mm long, and usually fused into a cap.

The corolla of Gynostemma pentaphyllum is light green or white, with 5 deep lobes, which are ovate-lanceolate, 2.5 to 3 mm long and 1 mm wide.
