Differences between Pyracantha and Hawthorn

1. Differences between tree trunks

Pyracantha is an evergreen shrub with a trunk height of about 3 meters. The side branches are relatively short, and the old branches are dark brown without small hairs.

Hawthorn is a deciduous tree with rough bark that is dark gray or gray-brown in color. The old branches are gray-brown in color.

2. The difference between flowers

There are almost no small hairs on the pedicels and peduncles of Pyracantha. The pedicels are about 1 cm long and the flowers bloom from March to May.

The pedicels and flower stalks of hawthorn are covered with soft small hairs, which gradually fall off and decrease after flowering. The pedicels are shorter, about 4 to 7 mm long, and the flowers bloom from May to June.

3. Differences in Fruits

The fruit of Pyracantha is about 5 mm in diameter, the skin is orange-red or dark red, and the fruiting period is from August to November.

The fruit of hawthorn is larger than the previous one, with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 cm. The skin is dark red with light spots on it. The fruiting period is from September to October.
