Hydrangea cutting time and method

Hydrangea cutting time and method

Hydrangea is loved for its plump flower shape and varied colors and is a common potted ornamental plant. There are many ways to propagate hydrangeas , including cuttings, layering, sowing and dividing seedlings, among which cuttings are the most commonly used method. To improve the success rate of cuttings, you need to master the correct cutting method and the best time. Let’s learn together the time and method of hydrangea cuttings.

1. Cutting time

The best time for hydrangea cuttings is April-May in spring and September-October in autumn. The climate is cool during these two periods, which is suitable for plant growth. February in early spring is also a good time for cuttings. At this time, the plants have just awakened from hibernation and are very active, which is conducive to root growth.

2. Cutting steps

1. Select branches

Choose healthy, semi-lignified branches with leaf buds and cut them obliquely as cuttings.

2. Processing cuttings

Make a flat cut above the leaf node, retaining one node and two leaves, and trim off the excess to reduce water evaporation. Apply rooting powder or soak the bottom of the cuttings in rooting solution, and prepare for cuttings after drying.

3. Prepare the potting soil

Use a medium with good drainage and rich nutrients such as vermiculite, perlite , river sand, etc., and it is better to use a mixture.

4. Cutting rooting

Make small holes in the medium, insert the cuttings, compact the soil lightly, and spray the medium wet. Avoid direct insertion to avoid damaging the base of the cuttings.

5. Management after cutting

After cuttings, place them in a cool and ventilated place and spray water regularly to keep them moist. Under normal circumstances, it will take about 20 days for the roots to grow and can be transplanted into pots after one month.

In short, everyone also needs to be careful to avoid frequent pulling out and checking during the cutting period to avoid damaging the new roots. Maintain suitable temperature and humidity and avoid extreme climatic conditions. You can increase your success rate with hydrangea cuttings by following these steps and precautions.
