Mosquito repellent grass

Every summer there are a lot of mosquito repellent plants. Are flower lovers overwhelmed by the choices? If we talk about the best mosquito repellent, it has to be this one: Geranium.

Function: mosquito repellent

There is a substance called citronellal in the smell of geranium, which can repel mosquitoes, so people call it mosquito repellent grass. Put a pot of it in a ventilated place at home, and the fragrance can be smelled in a house of more than ten square meters, and you don't even need to use mosquito coils!

Mosquito repellent grass cuttings:

If you want to grow mosquito repellent grass, just cut the root branches, preferably with leaves, 5-8 cm in length, and insert them into moist sandy soil (in hot weather, the survival rate of sandy soil is high). Be careful not to insert it too deep, 1-2 cm is enough. Put it in a cool place, spray water to humidify it every morning and evening, and it will take about 1 week to take root.

If you want to speed up rooting, you can also water some potassium permanganate solution (potassium permanganate: water = 1:500). During the cutting process, do not move the branches curiously, otherwise all your efforts will be wasted!

Daily maintenance:

Mosquito repellent grass grows fast. It is usually placed in a sunny and ventilated place at home. Just water it when the soil is dry. Even if you are lazy, it can still grow wildly. If your mosquito repellent grass is spreading out, Huahua recommends trimming it so that the fragrance will be stronger and the mosquito repellent effect will be better!

sunflower

Most flowers are afraid of the summer sun, but sunflowers are the only ones that dare to chase the sun. This big golden face makes me feel much better just by looking at it, right?

Function: ornamental, melon seed

The flowering period of sunflowers is from June to September (varies in different regions). Not only can they be enjoyed in the summer, but they can also produce seeds in the fall. If you grow them for a few months, you can have a good harvest!

Sunflower sowing:

You can't grow ordinary melon seeds. You need special sunflower seeds. You don't need to peel them and bury them directly in the soil. Water the flowerpot thoroughly and put it in a cool place for 3-5 days. After germination, you can see the light every morning and evening, and it will grow faster.

When the seedlings grow to 8-10 cm, they are ready for transplanting. It is more appropriate to plant 1-2 trees in a pot with an ordinary diameter of 20 cm. Too many trees may easily suffer from malnutrition. When repotting, it is best to keep some soil on the roots so as not to damage the seedlings. After transplanting, place them in a cool place for 2-3 days, and then move them to a place with good light and maintain them normally.

Sunflower care:

Everyone knows that sunflowers like light, so it is best to grow them outdoors or on a south balcony, and water them when the soil is dry. If your home only has a north balcony with some diffuse light, you can also grow it, but the flowers will not be big and it will be difficult to produce seeds.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is recognized as an easy-to-grow flower. It can survive without any care all year round. You must keep a few pots of it at home in the summer. It can be used for both edible and medicinal purposes!

Function: Edible, anti-inflammatory

The edible types of aloe vera are mainly Aloe barbadensis, Aloe vera sinensis, and Aloe vera serrata. It is not yet known whether other varieties are edible. It is best to pick large aloe leaves that are more than 3 years old, cut them into sections, peel them, and have thick leaf flesh and a good taste.

Rinse the leaf flesh several times with clean water, then cut into small pieces for later use. Whether you mix it with honey water, lemon water, or mix it with tomatoes, it is a refreshing and heat-relief food. It is simply a natural jelly!

In addition to eating, aloe vera can also reduce inflammation and relieve pain. In the summer, when you are exposed to the sun, you can go home at night to pick an aloe leaf, take out the leaf flesh and mash it, and apply it directly on your face to whiten and reduce inflammation. However, Huahua recommends applying it for 5-10 minutes, as it may cause irritation if applied for too long. In addition, applying aloe vera to burned areas can also relieve pain.

Aloe Vera Care:

Aloe vera is very easy to grow. Just place it in a well-lit and ventilated place at home. It is best to plant it in sand mixed with ordinary garden soil. Water it once every 3 to 5 days in hot weather, and it will grow quickly. You will have a crazy number of cubs in one summer!

Jasmine

If you ask which flower is the most fragrant in the hot summer, it must be jasmine. Huahua sees that many flower lovers have already grown this plant, and it has bloomed several times.

Function: brew tea

Jasmine flowers can be picked and dried to make dried flower tea for easy storage; they can also be used to make tea directly, preferably with some green tea or Maojian tea. The fragrance is refreshing and you will be "intoxicated" with just one sip in the summer...

Jasmine water plug:

In addition to using sandy soil for cuttings, you can try water cuttings if the weather is too hot. Cut 5-8 cm long jasmine branches, preferably with a pair of leaves on the top. Cut half of the leaves off to preserve nutrients. Insert them in a foam board, leaving 1-2 cm exposed underneath. Place them in a bucket of water and let them take root in a cool place for 7-10 days.

Jasmine care:

The more jasmine flowers are exposed to the sun, the more fragrant they are, so they should be placed in a well-lit place at home. Some flower lovers’ jasmine flowers stop blooming after blooming once, so quickly prune them and leave 2-3 pairs of leaves on each branch. This will stimulate the jasmine to bloom again!

Rose

Roses are very popular this year, and almost every household has them. Which varieties do you have planted? Anyway, Huahua has been fascinated by the roses in our flower lovers community!

Function: viewing

Artificial cultivation technology is becoming more and more advanced, and the flowering period of roses has become longer. There are more varieties, fuller shapes, and brighter colors. Which flower lover can resist not growing them?

Compared with other flowers, roses are easier to preserve. Cut them and hang them upside down in a ventilated and dry place. They will dry in 2-3 days and the color will not fade. You can enjoy them in a vase for up to 1 year.

Rose cuttings:

The survival rate of rose cuttings is low in hot weather. You can first soak the branches in potassium permanganate or carbendazim solution for 10-20 minutes. During this time, poke holes in a disposable water cup for ventilation, and put in sand as a substrate.

Insert the branches into the sand 2-3 cm deep. If they are inserted too deep, they will easily rot. Leave a few leaves on each branch for photosynthesis. Cover the outside with a large pot or foam box for better moisture retention. Be sure to place it in a cool place to avoid light. It will take 5-8 days to take root.

Rose maintenance:

Roses are easily attracted by aphids and red spiders. Flower lovers can make their own garlic water, chili water, and pepper water to spray and kill the insects. In serious cases, they can be ruthlessly pruned and allowed to grow again. When the temperature is too high in summer, pay attention to shade, otherwise it will enter a state of suspended animation and it will be difficult to bloom normally.

ivy

Ivy is evergreen all year round and can be grown by flower lovers from both the north and the south. It is drought-resistant and sun-resistant and is much easier to grow than green ivy.

Function: Purify the air

When it comes to purifying the air and absorbing formaldehyde, people may first think of green ivy, but the purification ability of ivy is even stronger than green ivy!

Ivy water plug:

Pour half of a mineral water bottle with clean water, cut a branch of ivy and put it in. No need to cover the lid. Change the water every 2-3 days. It will take root in about a week. After taking root, you can grow it in water or cut small pieces and plant them in soil. It will soon bloom out of the pot!

Ivy care:

Ivy has low environmental requirements. As long as it is not exposed to direct sunlight in summer, it is best to place it on a windowsill with good light. Water it when the soil in the pot is dry. A small pot can climb the wall crazily. Flower lovers who don’t like it to climb randomly can also shape it~

Dendrobium

The Dendrobium flower can be grown on a piece of old bark. When it blooms, the leaves are invisible and the whole house is filled with fragrance. Do you recognize it?

Function: Edible

The flowers and stems of Dendrobium officinale are edible. The flowers can be used to make tea or stir-fry, and the stems can be used to make soup, which has a nourishing effect.

Dendrobium planting:

Dendrobium likes to grow on wood. Find a piece of bark or living wood, soak it in a solution of carbendazim for 20 minutes to disinfect it, tie the Dendrobium branches to the wood with a thread, hang it up and spray it with water, and it will take root in a few days.

Dendrobium maintenance:

Dendrobium likes a humid environment and needs to be sprayed with water every day to keep it moist. If you find it troublesome, you can put the wood in a pot filled with water, which can save you a lot of effort!

Perilla

Summer is the season for eating fish and crayfish. When Huahua was a child, the elderly at home would add some perilla when cooking fish and shrimp. I will never forget the taste, it is so fragrant!

Function: Spice

Perilla has a strong aroma and can be used to remove fishy smell and enhance the flavor of fish and shrimp dishes. Huahua recommends that you add basil half a minute before the dish comes out of the pot, or add it after the dish comes out of the pot and then pour the soup, so that the flavor of the basil can be brought to the extreme!

Those who like basil must not miss the basil barbecue and basil snails. The taste... Only those who have eaten it know it.

Identification of Perilla:

In the early years, perilla grew naturally in front of and behind our houses. The leaves with purple on both sides are called perilla, and the leaves with green front and purple back are called green perilla. If you pinch the leaves, a strong smell of spices will immediately come to your nose. Both of these can be eaten, but the others are another matter!

Perilla care:

Perilla is easy to grow and can be planted in ordinary garden soil. It is best to place it in a sunny place to avoid direct sunlight. Water it when the soil is dry. Just pick the leaves when you want to eat them, and they will grow again!
