How to prune holly

Pruning time

The branches and leaves of holly grow very quickly, with many new shoots emerging every year. Therefore, holly is a plant that is very resistant to pruning, and there is no need to worry that excessive pruning will affect the growth of the plant.

In summer, holly has more branches and leaves and grows more vigorously, so it can be pruned in summer. In autumn, the holly can be pruned into the ideal shape according to the image design. At this time, in addition to shaping the holly, you also need to thin out the branches.

Trimming area

We usually prune the thin and curved branches of holly with weaker growth ability. Generally, we will cut off about one-fifth of the whole branch, retaining only the flower bud part, and prune the flower branches at the top of the holly crown appropriately.

We can also trim it into a suitable shape according to the needs of garden decoration. Generally, appropriate pruning is required according to the growth condition and crown shape of the holly. When pruning, the holly can be trimmed a little lower than your ideal height. The holly will quickly grow into a suitable shape and size and appear more natural.

After pruning the holly into the ideal shape, you should regularly prune the newly grown branches, because holly has a very strong growth ability. If you don't prune it in time, the holly shape you have created will be easily destroyed.

When pruning, also pay attention to pruning some side branches to increase the light transmittance and air permeability of the holly, which can prevent the reproduction of pests.

Post-pruning care

After pruning the branches, wounds will appear on the holly tree. We must pay attention to prevent wound infection and cause diseases of the holly tree. Infection of the cut can easily cause branch blight of the holly tree. If symptoms occur, medication should be used for treatment in time. You can apply a little quicklime on the wound to prevent infection.
