How to deal with pig bite racks

How to deal with pig bite racks

Pig farmers, especially those who raise pigs on a large scale, will encounter the problem of pig fights. Pig fights can produce stress reactions, such as injuries from biting each other and easy infection, which can cause various diseases. Let’s learn how to deal with pig bite racks.

1. Reduce density

Due to overcrowding, pigs cannot move freely and become easily irritable. In addition, excessive stocking density will cause poor air quality in the pig house. These phenomena will cause physical discomfort to the pigs, resulting in the pigs themselves becoming mentally excited, increasing their aggressiveness and leading to fighting.

Reduce the stocking density. It is appropriate to have 8 to 10 pigs in one pigpen. The area occupied by one pig should be 1.5-2 square meters in summer and 1.2-1.5 square meters in winter.

2. Grouping

When grouping pigs, pig farmers should pay attention to the size of the pigs and try to group pigs of the same size together. If the sizes are uneven, it will lead to fighting. And smaller pigs will be more seriously injured. If strange pigs mix into the herd, it may cause fights among the pigs.

The animals are divided into pens according to their size, preferably large, medium and small. Isolate aggressive pigs promptly and keep them separately.

3. Tail docking of piglets

Piglets should have their tails and teeth cut off in time to reduce the risk of serious injuries from biting. You can also place some toys in the pen, such as hanging interesting objects on ropes or chains, or placing tires to distract the pigs.

4. Environmental control

If the air environment in the pig house is too poor, it can easily cause the pigs to become restless and then fight. Therefore, in response to this situation, the pig house should be well ventilated and the humidity should be kept at a reasonable level. Of course, don’t forget to keep the pig house warm in winter, and choose the warmest time of the day for ventilation.

5. Balanced nutrition

The feed should be nutritionally balanced as much as possible so that the pigs can eat well, digest and absorb the food well. Regularly regulate and clear the heat of the pigs, soothe the liver and regulate qi, observe the pigs frequently, and if biting occurs, find out the cause in time for timely treatment to avoid a vicious cycle, and achieve early detection, early analysis, early treatment, and early control.

6. Interference with smell

You can spray some floral water or something like white wine or white vinegar among the pigs. This will interfere with the pigs' sense of smell so that they will not fight because of different smells.

7. Improve stress resistance

After a fight, pigs can easily die due to stress response. Improving the pig herd's ability to resist stress can reduce casualties caused by biting. You can add Dongxia Taibao to the drinking water of the pigs to prevent various stress phenomena in the pigs.
